Alfre Woodard

Native Tulsan and award-winning actress Alfre Woodard has accepted a role in "Twelve Years a Slave," a period drama about a free black man forced into slavery, with a cast including Brad Pitt, who is producing the picture.

"Slave" is based on an autobiography by Solomon Northup first published in 1853 about his experience of being kidnapped, sold as a slave on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., and his inhumane treatment at the hand of many masters over a dozen years in Louisiana.

Chiwetel Ejiofor ("American Gangster") plays Northup, while Michael Fassbender ("Prometheus") plays one of the slave owners.

The film is directed by Steve McQueen, whose "Shame" last year featured Fassbender in an acclaimed performance.

Woodard, a Bishop Kelley High School graduate, plays Mistress Shaw, a former slave who has found a way to elevate her status in an unforgiving Southern caste system.

The former Oscar-nominee and four-time Emmy Award-winning actress also returns to "True Blood" in at least two episodes this season, as the mother of Lafayette's character, in a role for which she received her 16th Emmy nomination last season.

"Twelve Years a Slave" also stars Paul Giamatti and Benedict Cumberbatch. Production begins later this month, with a release expected in 2013.
