I had some interesting interviews this week.
I talked to Bill Gaither, author with his wife Gloria of hundreds of contemporary Christian songs, including some of the most popular worship songs on the planet, winner of 28 Dove awards and six Grammy Awards, and named the Christian Songwriter of the Century by the American Society of Composers and Publishers.
The most surprising thing he told me was that he still lives in the modest house he and his wife built for $25,000 in 1965 in a small Midwestern town where they were both English teachers. He can afford to live anywhere, but that’s home for him. It’s two miles from the farmhouse where he grew up.
The story is scheduled to run July 20.
I also talked to a man who is planning to run across Mongolia – 1,500 miles – to raise money and support of Mongolian orphans. He will run 30 miles a day, more than a marathon, six days a week for two months. His wife and two young children will make the trek in a vehicle as his support team, and the whole family will live in a tent along the way.
One of his goals is to inspire people to take a risk and follow their dreams.
That story runs July 13.
And I talked to a woman who spent her early childhood traveling with an evangelist in the 1970s who had what was then called the biggest gospel tent in the world. She was in Tulsa to talk about a book she wrote about her experiences, and was surprised to find out that the evangelist, now in his 80s, will hold tent meetings in Tulsa later this month. She considers the man her stepfather. He was later imprisoned for tax evasion. I haven’t figured out what to do with this story, but it was fascinating.
