"Star Trek" and "Adventureland" as best-picture nominees? Would that be so wrong?
I've received some interesting comments since my blog in favor of the Academy Awards expanding the best picture nominees to 10 beginning this year. Some see intrigue in the decision, some see dilution.
An e-mailer referenced my blog mentions of "The Dark Knight" and "Wall-E" as movies that might have made the cut last year in an expanded-to-10 field as though I merely mused that it would be fun to have a couple of the year's most popular films included; not at all. Both of those exceptional pictures were in my top 10 list that I released in January.
I can say right now that if "Star Trek" ends up in my top 10 for this year, I hope it could gain one of the 10 best picture nominations as well. It would be an intriguing development not only for myself, as I found the picture to be of extremely high quality, but for the everyday fan who stopped watching the Academy Awards years ago — or who has not yet watched — because they haven't seen most of the nominees.
"Star Trek," a big sci-fi hit, and "Adventureland," a coming-of-age comedy, are the two best pictures I've seen released by Hollywood in 2009, and the only two features I've given 3½ star ratings.
Could either be a best-picture nominee come February? Or maybe Pixar's "Up," which some will no doubt be championing? It's all a fun parlor game for now, with 10 slots available.
