"Glory Hounds," a two-hour special about military working dogs, will air at 7 p.m. Thursday on Animal Planet.
It took the network a year to get permission for a camera crew to be embedded with troops in Afghanistan,
according to an AP story published Tuesday. The film crews followed the dogs into combat zones, where their job is to sniff out bombs so troops can safely pass.
Craig Constant, a cameraman for "Glory Hounds" who witnessed a blast that severely injured one of the military dog handlers he was filming, said the dogs are much more than tools.
"They are soldiers," Constant told the AP. "They just have four paws instead of two feet. They walk in front of the platoons. It's a deadly game, and they die all the time. But they save lives by finding IEDs that technology can't find."
