ONEOK Field will be an official local site of the 14th annual Worldwide Toast to Harry Caray on Thursday. (March 1). The official toast will be held at 5:55 p.m. in Tycoon's Stadium Club on the suite level located behind home plate.
Admission is free and this event is open only only for individuals ages 21 and over.
Parking will be available in the lot located just north of ONEOK Field and along both sides of Elgin Street. Access to Tycoon's will be available only through the Home Plate Entrance. Tycoon's will open at 4:30 p.m. Budweiser will provide each attendee with one free drink for the official toast. The Drillers will also provide free snacks.
Caray, a longtime broadcaster primarily with the Cardinals and Cubs,
is well remembered for his singing Take Me Out to the Ballgame during the seventh inning stretch at Wrigley Field. No one sang that song better, with the possible exception of my former World colleague John A. Ferguson.
When I think about singing at the ballpark I also think about Davy Jones -- and I am not talking about Ty Cobb's former teammate with the Detroit Tigers. I am referring to the Monkees' Davy Jones, who died on Wednesday at age 66.
I grew up as a Monkees fan and still enjoy their music. I got a chance to finally see them in concert (without Michael Nesmith) with Weird Al Yankovic after an Oklahoma City 89ers game at All-Sports Stadium in 1987.
The Monkees were great, but also so was the game. The Monkees were the incentive for me to drive across the turnpike for an 89ers game for the first time and I've been many time since to pro baseball games in OKC. Thanks to Davy Jones and the Monkees, I've seen a lot of great baseball in OKC the past 25 years (between Drillers homestands).
