Owasso's Pete Kozma capped a big September with six hits in seven at-bats with five RBIs over the last two games for St. Louis.
Kozma, who also has been strong defensively at shortstop, batted .349 in September after being called up from Triple-A Memphis. That is the highest September batting average for a Cardinals rookie since Keith Hernandez batted .350 in 1975 after being called up from Tulsa.
Kozma's 14 RBIs in September are the most in a month by a Cardinals rookie shortstop in at least 50 years (records are incomplete before that time). He also had the most RBIs in September by a Cardinals shortstop since Edgar Renteria in 2003.
During the week of Sept. 24-30, Kozma went 10-for-21 with one homer and nine RBIs to help St. Louis' chances for a wild card berth...
Rafael Ortega, who is expected to be the Tulsa Drillers' center fielder in 2013, had two hits in three at-bats in his major league debut for the Colorado Rockies against the Los Angeles Dodgers on Sunday.
Ortega, 21, was an emergency call-up due to a massive number of injuries on the Rockies' major league roster. This year, he batted .283 with eight homers, 60 RBIs and 36 stolen bases for Single-A Modesto. The Rockies were planning to add him to their 40-man roster anyway after the season in order to protect him from being drafted by another team.
