Owasso graduate Pete Kozma is still in the St. Louis Cardinals' long-range plans despite the re-signing of veteran shortstop Rafael Furcal.

The Cards signed Furcal for two years. By the end of that contract, the Cardinals will know whether Kozma, a 2007 first-round draft choice, will be their long-term shortstop.

Kozma batted .176 in 16 games for St. Louis this year, primarily coming off the bench in May and June. He spent the rest of the season at Memphis, where he batted .214 in his first shot at Triple-A. It was reminiscent of his first Double-A season. His numbers improved significantly in his second Double-A season and the Cardinals are hoping that trend will continue at Memphis in 2012.

Kozma, 23, did show notable defensive progress at Memphis in 2011 with only 14 errors in 109 games, split between shortstop and second base after he committed 34 at Double-A Springfield in 2010.

One infielder who isn't in St. Louis' plans anymore is veteran Ryan Theriot, who was not offered a contract before the arbitration deadline on Monday...

Perkins native and former Oral Roberts pitcher Jeremy Hefner is on the New York Mets' 40-man major league roster after being claimed on waivers from Pittsburgh, which claimed him from San Diego earlier this fall.

Hefner, 25, was 9-7 with a 4.98 ERA at Triple-A Tucson this season. He was sixth in the Pacific Coast League with 120 strikeouts in 157 innings...

Casey Weathers won't be returning for another season in the Tulsa Drillers bullpen after being traded along with aother former Driller and Colorado first-round draft choice, third baseman Ian Stewart, to the Cubs last week in a deal that sent outfielder Tyler Colvin, another ex-first round pick, to the Rockies.

Weathers and Stewart have potential, but they needed a change of scenery as did Colvin, who sent ORU to a heartbreaking Super Regional loss with a walkoff grand slam off ex-Drillers pitcher Sean Jarrett at Clemson in 2006...

The Rockies also said good-bye to former Drillers outfielder Ryan Spilborghs, who had been in the majors for seven seasons. Spilborghs and ex-Drillers outfielder Cole Garner were not tendered contracts on Monday...
