Tulsa Drillers general manager Mike Melega has been named as the 2012 Bill Valentine Texas League Executive of the Year Award winner.

The Drillers had the second-highest attendance for a single season in Tulsa’s pro baseball history that dates back to 1905. Tulsa drew 372,624 fans during the regular season at ONEOK Field. That trails behind the 408,183 in ONEOK Field’s opening season in 2010.

In addition, the Drillers had a sellout crowd for the U.S. Cellular Texas League All-Star Game and their second-highest attendance for a home playoff game.

The award is determined by voting from club directors in the league and is named for the Arkansas Travelers’ former longtime executive.

Former Drillers owner Chuck Lamson was a three-time winner of the award. He won in 1996 and ‘98 as general manager, and in 2010 as owner.
Ex-Drillers general manager Joe Preseren also won the award in 1987 and ‘93.

Melega, 41, is a native of Staten Island, N.Y. He was promoted to GM from assistant general manager in 2006. Melega, a graduate of Syracuse University, has been in the Drillers’ front office since 1994, working in group sales, promotions and sales and marketing.

"It's a great honor for everybody in our organization," Melega said. "We have a great staff."

Melega will officially receive the award at Baseball’s Winter Meetings in December in Nashville...

The Arkansas Travelers have extended their working agreement with the Los Angeles Angels for two years through 2014. Arkansas has been affiliated with the Angels since 2001. That followed a 35-year relationship with the St. Louis Cardinals...

Tulsa has two years remaining on its four-year agreement with the Colorado Rockies. The Drillers have been the Rockies' Double-A affiliate since 2003, following 26 years with the Texas Rangers...

Colorado pitcher Jorge De La Rosa, who made two rehab starts for Tulsa in May, will finally make his 2012 major league debut on Thursday against San Francisco. De La Rosa, who was 16-9 in 2009, has not pitched in the majors since May 24, 2011, after undergoing Tommy John elbow surgery. He made nine rehab starts for four minor league teams overall this year.

Rockies shortstop Troy Tulowitzki, who appeared in seven rehab games for Tulsa in August and September, could rejoin the Colorado lineup before the end of the season.
