Former Tulsa Drillers infielder Chris Nelson, who has battled an irregular heart beat this season, won his first National League player of the week award on Monday.

Nelson, the ninth overall pick in the 2004 draft, is having a breakthrough season for the Colorado Rockies. He his batting .294 with nine homers and 47 RBIs in 96 games. Nelson played for Tulsa in 2008-09.

From Sept. 10-16, Nelson had 14 hits in 25 a-bats with a homer and five RBIs...

Tulsa-born Les Moss, a catcher for 13 seasons in the majors from 1946-58, died on Aug. 29 in Longwood, Fla. He was 87.

Moss played for the St. Louis Browns, Boston Red Sox, Baltimore Orioles and Chicago White Sox. He briefly managed the White Sox and Detroit Tigers. In 1978, he was the Sporting News' minor league manager of the year with Evansville. He also was Houston's pitching coach from 1982-89...

Former Drillers outfielder Gabe Kapler, who played in the majors from 1998-2010, is playing for Israel in the World Baseball Classic qualifying this month.

Israel's team also includes five players who were in the Texas League this year -- San Antonio first baseman Nate Freiman and infielder Cody Decker, Frisco pitcher Richard Bleier, Arkansas infielder Casey Haerther and Corpus Christi pitcher Josh Zeid.

Springfield pitcher Richard Castillo is playing for Spain.
