Although former Tulsa Drillers pitcher Drew Pomeranz was optioned to the minors on Thursday, he will open the season as the Colorado Rockies' fifth starting pitcher.

The Rockies don't need a fifth starter until April 15 so they will carry an extra reliever until then. Pomeranz, 3-0 with a 0.53 ERA this spring, is expected to make a minor league start for Colorado Springs or Tulsa on April 10.

On Saturday, Pomeranz ended spring training on a strong note as tossed six shutout innings in a 3-1 win against the White Sox...

Former Oral Roberts and Drillers infielder Doug Bernier has only appeared in two major league games in his 11-year pro career, but he's making a strong bid to make the New York Yankees' roster. Bernier, who is known primarily for his defense, is batting .344 in 21 games.

Another former Drillers infielder trying to make the Yankees as a utility player is Jayson Nix, who is batting .323 in 18 games...

Former Oklahoma State infielder Matt Hague appears to be a lock to make his major league debut with Pittsburgh. Hague is tied for the major league lead with six homers this spring and he is batting .373 with 13 RBIs...

Minnesota sent ex-ORU infielder Michael Hollimon to its minor league camp on Friday, but his strong showing this spring could put him in position to reach the majors for the first time since 2008. Hollimon batted .360 in 21 games...

Kansas City first baseman Eric Hosmer is close to a spring training triple crown. He has five homers, and leads the majors with a .429 batting average and 28 RBIs.

Former Drillers and Stillwater outfielder Matt Holliday is sixth with a .409 batting average for St. Louis. New Angels first baseman Albert Pujols is 210th at .404 with five homers and 15 RBIs...

A major pitching surprise for Kansas City has been Luis Mendoza, the majors' only four-game winner. Mendoza, 12-5 for Triple-A Omaha last year, has a 0.54 ERA and appears to have a good chance of winning a spot in the Royals' starting rotation...

Outfielder Scott Beerer, who played the past two seasons for Tulsa, is batting .265 in 21 games for Baltimore this spring. He will start the season at Triple-A Norfolk.
