Tulsa Drillers lefty Edwar Cabrera was called up by the Colorado Rockies on Tuesday.
Cabrera, 24, was scheduled to start for the North in the 76th annual U.S. Cellular Texas League All-Star Game on Thursday night at ONEOK Field. Instead, it appears he will make his major league debut against Washington on Wednesday.
Drillers manager Duane Espy was leaning on Tuesday night toward naming Tulsa's Dan Houston as the replacement for Cabrera as the North's starting pitcher.
Cabrera was 8-4 with a 2.94 ERA for the Drillers this season. He led the Texas League in innings (98) and WHIP (0.90). Cabrera also had been selected for the All-Star Futures Game on July 8 at Kansas City.
Cabrera, 24, was looking forward to pitching in the All-Star games, but also hoping for the chance to pitch in the majors this season. His progress in developing his curveball allowed him to make major strides in the past month.
"I’m really happy because my curveball is definitely better now," Cabrera said on Saturday. "(Pitching coach Dave) Schuler is working with me every day.
"He told me to keep going to work because at one moment you can move up. I try to keep working hard every day and keep getting better with my curveball. I'm a more complete pitcher than last year. I'm more focused on the game. I've got better concentration."
In another TL All-Game development, Frisco third baseman Mike Olt won't play due to a hamstring injury. He leads the TL with 20 homers, is second with 58 RBIs and fourth in batting average at .305.
