St. Louis called up Springfield pitcher Trevor Rosenthal on Monday -- a day before he was scheduled to start against the Tulsa Drillers at ONEOK Field.
Rosenthal, who pitched in the U.S. Cellular Texas League All-Star Game in Tulsa after beating the Drillers in a June 23 start, was 8-6 with a 2.68 ERA.
Rosenthal, who had become St. Louis' top pitching prospect in the minors, will be added to the Cardinals' bullpen as he replaces Maikel Cleto, who was optioned to Triple-A Memphis.
St. Louis rarely calls up players from Double-A Springfield. An exception was Cleto last year when St. Louis needed a fresh arm for the bullpen and Cleto already was on the 40-man roster.
For St. Louis to call up Rosenthal from Double-A now and add him to the 40-man roster shows that the Cardinals front office is getting desperate to find answers to solve the team's problems in close games that were evident in Cincinnati's three-game sweep over the weekend. St. Louis is 46-43 overall, but 14-24 in games decided by two runs or less...
Owasso's Dylan Bundy had a real good start on Saturday. He pitched five innings, allowed only two hits and one unearned run, walked one and struck out eight. But Bundy came away with a 3-1 loss to Carolina. Bundy is 4-3 with a 3.11 ERA in eight starts for high Single-A Frederick (Orioles)...
Another tough break for former Drillers pitcher Juan Nicasio, whose season ended last year with a broken neck. His 2012 season is over after undergoing microfracture knee surgery. Nicasio was 2-3 with a 5.28 ERA this year for Colorado...
Union graduate Les Walrond is back in Organized Baseball. Walrond, 35, signed with Toronto over the weekend and was sent to Double-A New Hampshire, where he joined former Union player Brad Glenn. Walrond, a lefty reliever, has pitched in 23 major league games in his career, with his last big-league stint coming with Philadelphia in 2008.
