Owasso's Dylan Bundy was supposed to have the longest start of his pro career on Thursday night when he pitched for high Single-A Frederick at Wilmington (N.C.).
Bundy, the fourth overall choice by Baltimore in last year's amateur draft, had not been allowed to pitch more than five innings and was on a 75-pitch limit in his previous 19 starts.
Bundy, however, will now be permitted to go six or seven innings and about 100 pitches.
But he didn't get the chance on Thursday as his start turned out to be his shortest of the season.
Bundy retired the first eight batters he faced with three strikeouts before walking the ninth with two outs in the third inning. At that point, the game was suspended due to lightning and high winds. A strong downpour followed and the game was called for the night. It will likely be resumed Aug. 20 at Frederick.
Bundy, who is 4-3 with a 2.98 ERA for Frederick, retired Red Oak graduate Lane Adams on a pop out in the first inning. Adams is batting .240 with six homers since being promoted to Wilmington (Royals) from low Single-A Kane County last month.
Wilmington manager and former major league catcher Vance Wilson said to the Wilmington News Journal about Bundy: “He’s impressive. “There’s not anything I can say that hasn’t been written or said. His composure, the way he goes about his business, he obviously doesn’t have mechanical issues. He’s just a solid pitcher. He’ll be around a long time. He probably won’t be in the minor leagues long. Just a matter of paying his dues and getting his innings in.” ...
The Los Angeles Angels have signed former Tulsa Drillers reliever Jarrett Grube and sent him to the Double-A Arkansas Travelers, who open a four-game series against the Drillers at ONEOK Field on Friday night.
Grube was 0-5 with a 9.26 ERA at Triple-A Tacoma (Mariners) before being released two weeks ago. He was used as a starter and reliever. In 106 relief appearances for Double-A Tulsa from 2007-09, Grube was 11-6 with a 3.45 ERA...
Bishop Kelley graduate Dallas Keuchel suffered his third straight loss for Houston on Thursday. Keuchel is 1-3 with a 4.63 ERA in six starts, but he's trending downward. He allowed only three earned runs over 20 innings in his first three major league starts, but has given up 15 earned runs in 15 innings of his past three starts.
Of course, not many pitchers are winning for Houston, which is in a 12-43 swoon...
A bright spot for Houston is former Drillers pitcher Xavier Cedeno, who was just recalled again from Triple-A Oklahoma City. Cedeno, a lefty specialist, has a 2.70 ERA in 14 appearances for Houston. He pitched for Tulsa in 2008-09...
An interesting feat for the St. Louis Cardinals on Friday as they homered in five consecutive innings for the first time in their long history. St. Louis won 9-6 over the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field.
