Update: It's confirmed. Eddie Murphy will host the 84th Academy Awards, which will be telecast on Feb. 26 on ABC, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced Tuesday afternoon.

It's still 12 days until the Emmy Awards, but Awards Season has officially come out of dormancy. Game on.

With the Venice and Telluride film festivals already wrapped, it's that time of the year when wild pre-pre-pre Oscars speculation begins.

More interesting than which films are getting the most buzz, is who might host Hollywood's Biggest Night, Oscar night.

Many entertainment outlets and news sites, such as the LA Times , are reporting that Eddie Murphy is poised to tackle hosting duties for the 84th Academy Awards.

Very interesting. Back to a comedian, eh? Well, not so fast. Murphy was nominated for Best Supporting Actor for 2006's "Dreamgirls," and lost to "Little Miss Sunshine" actor Alan Arkin. Murphy was reportedly pretty unhappy -- some insiders said he stormed out of the Kodak Theater.

But even if he's not interested, the buzz can't be hurting Eddie's career. The actor would certainly be a lift from last year's disappointing duo of a fashionable Anne Hathaway and a dazed James Franco.

Still, the hype always seems to drag the Oscars down. I love the awards show -- it's my SuperBowl. I get giddy the whole week before. But producers of the show seem to jerk it back and forth each year, trying to reinvent the telecast.

I hope this year's producer, director/producer Brett Ratner, doesn't try too hard to make it too showy or shocking. Other names being tossed around for host duties include Billy Crystal and Jerry Seinfeld.

Who has been the best Oscars host?
