Having graduated to longer, more sophisticated bedtime stories, we put "Goodnight Moon" and his other baby books away on a shelf.

But my son asked for it by name the other night.

"You're a little old for that book now," I explained.

But he insisted. So I read it to him. And then he wanted to hear it again. And again. And again.

The next night, he reached for more of his old baby books. And again, I tried to steer him to some newer, longer books, that seemed more appropriate for a big kid like him. But again, he insisted.

After finishing off a couple of other stories, I opened "Goodnight Moon" and started to read it for the hundredth time.

But he interrupted and offered, instead, to read it to me.

And he did.

Well, sort of.

He stumbled over some of the words. And at times he said the right word while pointing at the wrong one, a clue that he was reciting the book from memory more than reading it.

But that's how a kid learns. And I learned something, too.

Baby books are exactly what he needs right now.
