I'm back from a 10-day vacation -- longest stretch I've had in about five years -- and I am rarin' to go. I have a lot to catch up on, especially status of new restaurants on the horizon, so I'll be in sprint mode for a week or two.

We spent a few days in Albuquerque, N.M., visiting family. I was able to dine out only twice, and followed the family folks wherever they wanted to go.

Wound up at Monroe's. It sounded like a barbecue joint to me, but found out it is a Mexican place founded in 1962, and it was pretty darn good.

What I liked about it was that all of Monroe's meats -- pork, chicken and beef -- are shredded, and each dish is given a generous portion. The red and green chilies both were awesome. Neither was so hot it masked the flavor of the food, and both had a pleasing flavor, with the red showing a little smokiness.

The other place we visited was a breakfast-lunch spot called Weck's. It had all the traditional American and Mexican breakfast choices, and, of course, everything -- omelets, burgers, you name it -- comes with red or green chili. Portions were huge. I didn't have to eat again until we reached Amarillo that evening.

Just in case you were wondering, I didn't have a ghost writer for the reviews and stories that appeared under my name last week. I turned those in before i left.

Naturally, I'm behind going into this week, but when the dust clears, I will have reviews on the new buffet at Hard Rock Hotel & Casino and a lunch place in downtown Broken Arrow, Family Back Creek Diner. I'll also cover the ins and outs of 742-Dine, a 20-year-old home and business delivery service that works with more than 50 local restaurants.
