...and in its place is Oklahoma City Ballet.
New artistic director Robert Mills decided that a new name was necessary to the revitalization of this company, which traces its history back 40 years.
The company, which had been struggling artistically and financially for several years, hired Mills to reinvent the company, after a proposed merger between Tulsa Ballet and the Oklahoma City company was rejected by the board of what was then called Ballet Oklahoma.
Oklahoma City Ballet presented its first program under its new name and leadership Saturday, Oct. 26. "Stars of American Ballet" featured the company's 13 dancers along with leading dancers from American Repertory Ballet, Louisville Ballet and Ballet San Jose, in program that included two works choreographed by Mills.
We weren't able to attend Saturday's performance, and as yet no review of it has surfaced.
The next show from Oklahoma City Ballet will be a new version of "The Nutcracker," choreographed by Mills, performed Dec. 13-14 and 19-21. Subsequent productions will be "Moulin Rouge," another Mills original, Feb. 13-14, and "The Wizard of Oz," March 27-29.
