Bartlesville junior Jakob Hartsock committed on Friday to play basketball at Brigham Young University.

Hartsock, a 6-foot-8 center, is averaging 19 points per game for the third-ranked Class 6A Bruins (21-2). BYU offered him the scholarship several hours before the Bruins' playoff-opening, 48-14 win over Sand Springs.

"I'm really looking forward to it," Hartsock said. "It's the school I've wanted to go to all my life."

Hartsock also considered Utah State. His brother, Noah, is BYU's leading scorer this season. Noah led Bartlesville to its last state tournament appearance in 2006 when he was the Tulsa World's state player of the year.

Just as Noah did, Jakob Hartsock plans to go on a church mission after graduating from high school. As a result, he will likely delay the start of his college career until the 2015-16 season.

BYU coach Dave Rose watched Jakob Hartsock play in a 65-33 win over Claremore on Jan. 10. Jakob had 31 points as he was 4-of-5 on treys.

Verbal commitments are not binding. The earliest he could sign is in November.
