The Super Bowl of Bass Fishing, the Bassmaster Classic, comes to Grand Lake and Tulsa Feb. 22-24.

You can read more on this event, including articles, background and more on our Tulsa World page here.

Since we're now about a month away from this premiere fishing event, I can assure you that it is still far too early to know exactly what our weather conditions will be then.

But, we can guess based on historical and current information:

Grand Lake

"Grand Lake is full," wrote Oklahoma Climatological Survey associate state climatologist Gary McManus. "So it will probably still be good at that time."

"Full" means to the top of the conservation pool, which is considered the
"normal" elevation. Above that, it is the flood pool, McManus said.

Average Feb. 22-24 temperatures for Spavinaw:
High: 55-56 degrees
Low: 32-33 degrees

The normal rainfall is about 0.1 of an inch each day, which McManus said is pretty low.

Like Tulsa, the Grand Lake is also in the midst of a nearly two-week streak of having less than 0.25 of an inch of rain, according to the Oklahoma Mesonet.

Tulsa

After about a 70-mile drive from Grand Lake (see map to the right), you'll be weighing the fish in Tulsa. Here's the weather you can expect here, based on 30-year averages from 1980-2010:

High: 55-56 degrees
Low: 33-34 degrees
Rain: 0.07 of an inch daily

Don't expect it to be too different from that. Here are our records for Feb. 22-24:
High: 66-70 degrees
Low: 13-22 degrees

If you want worse-case scenario, the most rain we've had on any of those dates was 2.99 inches of rain on Feb. 22, 1985 and 7 inches of snow on Feb. 23, 2003.

But once again, this is the way-too-early forecast, and those aren't even our normals.

Happy fishing!
