Forget Survivor, Big Brother or Amazing Race.
The best reality show on television is Arkansas football.
Since an April 1 motorcycle accident on a highway in northwest Arkansas, it has been a wild ride for the Razorbacks.
The latest is that Arkansas coach John L. Smith has filed for bankruptcy claiming debts of $25.7 million.
“I’m a football coach, not a businessman,” said Smith.
Actually, there are thousands of folks in Arkansas who might question whether Smith is a football coach.
The bankruptcy came just a few days after Smith yelled at reporters at a press conference to “smile”.
It is just a week after Smith told reporters at a press conference that the Arkansas players needed some hugs to help get their chins off the ground.
Meanwhile, the wheels are coming off Arkansas football faster than they did on Bobby Petrino’s motorcycle.
The Razorbacks lost to Louisiana-Monroe 34-31 two weeks ago. Arkansas, ranked eighth in the nation at the time, then fell out of the top 25, the largest drop in AP college football poll history.
Then, Arkansas followed up that disaster by losing to top-ranked Alabama, 52-0.
Arkansas quarterback Tyler Wilson, mentioned by some in the Heisman race in preseason, was out with an injury against Alabama and his use this week against Rutgers remains in question.
If all of this sounds bizarre, it is nothing compared to what started all of this mess.
Petrino, who had Arkansas talking about a possible national championship, took his 25-year-old mistress on a motorcycle ride last spring that resulted in a crash. His world came crashing down, as well.
It was later revealed that he had hired his mistress for a job in his office and that the affair had been going on for some time.
Arkansas fired Petrino 10 days later and hired Smith with a one-year contract.
There were hopes that Smith could stabilize the situation and possibly keep Arkansas in the BCS title chase.
Instead, Arkansas football has gone from bad to worse.
But, it is very entertaining.
