Emma Stone stars in "The Help." Will book success translate to box office? We'll see.
One of my favorite things to get all geeky about are books on the brink of becoming Big Movies. And I'm so excited to see "The Help," which is set for release Aug. 10.
Starring Emma Stone (from "Easy A," "Zombieland" and "Super Bad"), "The Help" is based on the best-selling novel by Katheryn Stockett about maids in 1960's Mississippi, just on the brink of the Civil Rights Movement.
Based on the buzz and the popularity of the novel, I imagine "The Help" will be a must-see for book clubs and best friends. But it does not necessarily mean huge box office success -- remember last year's "Eat, Pray Love" movie, starring Julia Roberts?
I really enjoyed that movie, and it eventually made more than $200 million worldwide, but many "experts" were quick to dub it a flop. It came in -- gasp -- second at the box office with a meager $23 million on opening weekend.
This summer's best comedy is "Bridesmaids," which smashed the chick flick label to cookie crumbs. But I'm afraid "The Help," without the promise of over-the-top slapstick comedy, will be a tougher sell for men.
It's all about buzz, and I hope the adaptation of "The Help" lives up to its potential.
I'll be there, what about you?
