Five things to know about Jordan Evans' verbal commitment to Oklahoma:
1 – Seems anyone who has watched the Norman North linebacker play this season has been floored. I saw him once – in North's season-opening win over Norman High. NHS took a late lead, then made the mistake of squib-kicking right to Evans. A 70-yard touchdown return later, North had come from behind to win.
It was pretty remarkable to see a 6-3, 210-pound linebacker have that kind of impact with the ball in his hands.
2 – If you want to see Evans for yourself, report to Boone Pickens Stadium Friday night. That's where his Timberwolves play Jenks for the Class 6A gold ball. If North wins, Evans will have starred. And if both those things happen, there will some who want him suited up for OU's bowl game.
3 – Evans will be the Sooners' first scholarship player from North, a school that opened in 1998. Former kicker Bryce Easley played at North, but he was a walk-on, and I honestly can't remember if he ever got on the field.
4 – Evans' dad was an All-Big 8 defensive tackle for the Sooners in 1988, '89 and '90. Early in Gary Gibbs' squeakier-than-Switzer regime, Scott Evans told Sports Illustrated: "After we've been through rapes and drugs and guns and probation, we'd be reinforcing a bad image if we showed up in hats and camos and boots and ripped T-shirts like we used to."
5 – Evans is the second linebacker in OU's recruiting class, joining Jordan Mastrogiovanni from Dallas Jesuit.
I'm guessing coaches have told both players: "Don't worry, I promise we'll figure out what to do with linebackers by the time you get here next summer."
