All eyes are on England for some while, starting with the British Open this weekend, running through the Olympics.

The British Open is some weird tournament. It is for the most part golf without trees. In America, golf without trees is called a federal disaster area. Golf without trees is like baseball without fences, football without sidelines.

At the British open, the premium is on hitting straight grounders.

They're called links courses because spectators get so bored with all the low liners, and so chilled in the weather, they must eat hot links to stay conscious.

The great thing about the British Open is the weather, wind that can bend a puttter, rain that sails sideways. And the rough this year is supposed to be knee high to a palace guard. What's better that seeing spoiled athletes look like municipal course players.

The British Open comes on the tube at around 5 a.m. And no, Gene, Tiger isn't winning.

As for the Olympics, we'll be working on a six-hour time difference, that's central time. So expect the competitive networks to blab results galore in hopes of spoiling the parties to come later.
