Bixby quarterback and baseball player T.J. Eckert was honored as the CLAY Awards athlete of the year during a ceremony at the Wyndham Hotel on Tuesday.

In 2011, Eckert completed 212-of-392 passes for 2,814 yards and 26 touchdowns. During the past two seasons, Eckert completed 375-of-659 passes for 5,160 yards and 52 TDs while leading Bixby to a pair of Class 6A playoff berths.

Eckert also started a few games as a sophomore to help Bixby reach the 5A state final.

The Christian Leadership in Athletics for Youth major award winners were Eckert, Verdigris’ Tanner Smith (leadership), Washington, Okla.’s Brandi Beller (community), Coweta’s Dakota Hummingbird (FCA Choice) and Owasso’s Matt Gallagher (Running the Race).

Oklahoma Wesleyan University sponsored the CLAY awards...

CytoSport, a sports nutrition company, has announced the launch of the Muscle Milk®
Recovery Grant Program which will provide up to $250,000 in grants to help rebuild and
revitalize high school athletic programs around the country.

Submissions for high school programs will be accepted on the Muscle Milk Facebook page
(www.facebook.com/musclemilk) starting May 21 through Nov. 30.
Grants will be awarded up to $25,000 per submission to programs that show a financial
hardship outlined in the application process.

Applicants must be at least 14 years old
and can nominate the high school of their choice on the Muscle Milk Facebook page
(www.facebook.com/musclemilk) where they will be required to submit a written
statement outlining their program’s needs, provide photos that support their request
and will have the option to upload a video link to help further tell their story.

The recipient programs will be selected in Jan. 2013.. .

Booker T. Washington is expected to name Shea Seals' successor as boys head basketball coach on June 1, according to Tulsa Public Schools athletic diretor Gil Cloud in a conversation with World sports columnist John E. Hoover on Thursday. There are at least four candidates still in the running for the position.

On Thursday, Guthrie promoted assistant Tim Flanagan to boys basketball head coach, succeeding Pete Papahronis, who took the girls head coaching position. Papahronis led Guthrie to Class 5A state titles in 2008 and '09. Guthrie reached the 5A state tournament in 2012.
