Black Friday shoppers wait in the cold outside Toys R Us.
I went day-after-Thanksgiving shopping one time, and it was a giant Black Friday Fail.
My husband and I were total rookies. We knew it was going to be rough getting up so early, but we were determined to get the super deal on a laptop. So, when we pulled into the Walmart parking lot around 5 a.m. we thought the hardest part was behind us.
We walked through the doors thinking we had it in the bag. No need to run, we decided. We headed straight for the electronics department, but didn’t see any of the advertised laptops.
Everyone but us seemed to know the drill. They loaded their baskets, racing to the checkout so they could head to the next store. And there we were, looking for a Walmart employee to help us find the laptops. Forget customer service on Black Friday.
Those of you who are experienced post-Thanksgiving shoppers already know this, but the super good deals aren't always in their designated departments.
Those laptops? They were in the produce section, right next to the navel oranges. By the time we found the display, there were two left. And you can guess what happened next. Before I knew what was happening, two shoppers grabbed them, stashing them in their baskets.
We thought about shopping for something else, but by then we knew we weren't cut out for stealth shopping. So instead of being first in line at Walmart, we ended up being first in line at Merritt's, where we drank coffee and hot chocolate and ate doughnuts. I ordered sticky buns to go.
At least we didn't come home empty handed.
