Seeing blue? The 2011 Emmy red carpet got a welcome shot of a cooler color among a sea of red from Claire Danes (from left), Katie Holmes and Cobie Smulders. Images from AP

I had way too much fun last night writing about Emmy gowns. But it was a whirlwind of activity on the red carpet, and there's plenty I didn't have time, or space, to write about in today's Emmy gown report.

Judging from the scattered notes and wadded up pieces of paper on the floor, I took waaayyy too many notes on dresses.

That said, I completely left out an entire category: Blue dresses.

It may have been a red, red world (seriously, how many red gowns were there last night, 100?), but blue dresses also made their presence known.

Presenters Amy Poehler, Katie Holmes and Claire Danes all shimmered in blue. Some looked better than others -- Amy looked good in Peter Som, while Katie was kind of blah in my book, wearing a too-simple Calvin Klein.

Danes was elegant in Oscar de la Renta, but she was nowhere near as great as last year's blush Armani Prive gown that earned rightful raves.

Still, good try, Claire. You're stepping up your fashion game.

Someone who needed guidance was "Glee" girl (no not Lea Michele) Dianna Agron, who tried her hardest to be a fashion forward diva in a Roksanda Ilincic shiny cerulean dress, but it was too drapey for her frame and a bit wrinkly to boot.

And finally, early-carpet-poser Cobie Smulders of "How I Met Your Mother" was a vision in an aqua Alberta Ferretti. So what if it was rather summery? She stood out in what was otherwise a literally red carpet of 2011.

Well done, blue belles.
