An overheated female incubates her eggs with her mouth open in attempt to cool down.
THE OUTDOORS
When I imagine what I might do if I were caught outdoors during a bad storm my mind tends to jump to ideas to shelter myself ...
Our bluebirds marked Mothers Day with the beginning of a new clutch of eggs.
Nest building began May 6 and egg number one ...
The nesting attempt summary is this: First egg, March 24; total eggs, three; first hatched April 11; total hatched, two; ...
Every bird is a roasted bird when it’s 100 degrees outside.
When a bird sits around with its mouth hanging open in the heat it is trying to cool down. Without sweat glands a bird opens its mouth to increase airflow and evaporation of moisture to help cool its core.
The bluebird female incubating eggs in the nest box in our backyard constantly sits with her mouth agape at the opening of the bird box. Even though the added sunscreen and Styrofoam top on the box help keep it a little cooler, I'm sure it's toasty in that box.
Tonight I think I’ll fashion a birdbath out of, uh, something and put it out in the yard. It will need to be rinsed and filled often, but it’s the time of year when fresh water can be as attractive to birds as is a bird feeder in winter.
