NORMAN — West Virginia needed a late rally to beat William & Mary in its opener.
However, it would be wise to not underestimate the Mountaineers.
Dan Holgorsen has a well-earned reputation as an innovative offensive mind.
West Virginia may come to Oklahoma as a big underdog for Saturday’s game but it will likely have some offensive wrinkles for Oklahoma’s defenders.
“He (Holgorsen) has his ball plays and he sticks with them,” said OU coach Bob Stoops on Monday.
West Virginia came back from a 10-point deficit to beat William &n Mary 24-17. The Sooners rolled Louisiana-Monroe 34-0.
OU is a three-touchdown favorite over the Mountaineers.
Still, one has to expect West Virginia will try a few offensive tricks to put a dent in the Sooners. A year ago, OU scored in the final minute to pull out a 50-49 victory.
“We had a real barn burner with them a year ago,” said Stoops. “We understand the challenge.”
But these are far different Mountaineers. Quarterback Geno Smith, Tavon Austin and Stedman Bailey all now play in the NFL.
Thus, West Virginia is trying to build a new offense with quarterback Paul Millard and Houston transfer running back Charles Sims (who had 120 yards against William & Mary).
But, the Mountaineers most need some defense. West Virginia ranked 108th in defense a year ago and gave up over 300 yards to William & Mary last week.
It may be early but Stoops said he’s ready for a Big 12 game.
“I’m looking forward to playing a conference game and they must be too since we agreed to move it up to this date,” said Stoops.
