St. Louis’ Jason Motte, who picked up the save in the World Series opener on Wednesday, first made it to the Texas League as a catcher, not a pitcher, with Springfield in 2005.
Motte made his TL debut as a catcher in Tulsa on April 24, 2005 at Drillers Stadium. He went 1-for-3 with an RBI single in a loss for Springfield. His batterymate that day was former Jenks and OU pitcher Buddy Blair.
That was Motte’s only TL game in 2005 before being sent back to Single-A. He also caught one game for Springfield in 2006 before being converted to a pitcher.
Motte returned to the TL as a reliever in 2007. It’s easy to see how Springfield swept the Drillers in the playoffs that year. For example in the opener, Springfield pitched Mitchell Boggs, Kyle McClellan, Motte and current Padres reliever Luke Gregerson to shut down Tulsa. And Springfield’s lineup included Allen Craig and Colby Rasmus.
