Cherry Picks is the first of many projects we hope to launch this year that optimize the look for your tablet and mobile web browsers.
Our new online restaurant guide provided us a chance to experiment.
We wanted to optimize the site we created to perfectly fit the device it was being viewed, whether that was a desktop computer, a laptop, a tablet or a smartphone.
Since web browers aren't just on desktop computers anymore, but every mobile device made now, you've seen a lot of places make tablet or mobile sites.
Check out
tulsaworld.com/cherrypicks and then change the size of the browser window. You will see that it "responds" to what size the window is. Get it very narrow -- much like it is on an iPhone or Android phone -- and you will see buttons appear that are sized for the tip of your finger.
Web Designer Micah Choquette (
@meetmicah)and Web Developer Michael Weaver worked together on this project. They both took time to make the site work best under whatever conditions a hungry people might find themselves.
The code allows for a quick load when you are on 3G and don't have a lot of bars. The photos are optimized so they are as clear as our photographers take them, but also small enough in file size not to slow you down.
Web Production Techs Michael Brower and Chris Moore databased hundreds of Scott Cherry's reviews from the past three years. We will add Cherry's new reviews each week to it.
They tagged each review by its location and cuisine. So you can search for Brookside or you can find out all the best places to eat Thai.
The saddest part of the project was finding out how many restaurants closed in such a short amount of time. One closed just two months after opening. According to Cherry's review, it wasn't due to bad food or bad service.
I hope this helps end any arguments when everyone is hungry and no one will pick a place to eat.
