WAYNE'S WORLD
Coworkers have been riding me all day that my American history quiz on Monday’s front page was too hard.
At first, ...
Healing historic injustices – whether they are five years old or 5,000 – starts with acknowledging them, a retired diplomat ...
The number of local homeowners who see their property tax assessments go up 5 percent automatically every year is decreasing, ...
Need a civics lesson? Ask a tow truck guy.
Have you seen the current TV ads for Allied Towing? I've seen them on cable channel 53, the one that runs endless replays of the channel 6 news.
They start off as a pitch for their towing service, but turn quickly into an urge for voters to think carefully and decisively.
In one ad the pitch man is sitting at a desk and he says that they'll tow your vehicle anywhere in Tulsa for $50, and then points out that political candidates can't be legally or ethically held to their campaign promises (true) and that voters should consider the candidates very carefully before they make a choice (double true).
In the other commercial the same guy is standing in front of a street project.
He says the corruption led to a delay in the project and that the delays resulted in people going out of business nearby.
He goes on to say, "Don't elect an incumbent," which seems to contradict his other commercial's point about making closely considered decisions about individual candidates after studying them, but perhaps he means "don’t' JUST elect an incumbent," i.e. don't blindly vote for the guy in office without studying his record.
He obviously feels strongly about local politics and is willing to put his money where his mouth is, and, therefore I say, Amen.
I called Allied Towing, hoping to learn more about the man and what might be motivating him, but he hasn't called me back yet. If I hear from him, I'll tell more.
