Do you like it raw?

When Mom made hand-cut fries on hamburger nights, my brother and I would beg for a slice sprinkled lightly with salt.

Did y'all ever do that? Seems like I took a food-handlers' class once, and they warned against it; but that was 10-plus years ago, and I can't even remember what I had for breakfast today. Is it safe?

I ask because I'm tempted to cut up a raw potato tonight and sprinkle it with salt. I have a 10-pound bag of taters in my kitchen, specifically in a cabinet I never open, so I'm afraid they'll go bad soon. I've been entertaining naughty visions of baked potatoes with some French sea-salt butter, but I typically top it with more than 1 tablespoon. It's more like I put a little potato with my butter. So having a raw one just seems like a more waist-friendly option -- unless, of course, it kills me, which would totally defeat the purpose.

What's probably weirder is that I sometimes eat uncooked spaghetti noodles or, as recently as last year's blizzard (when I was eating LOTS of bizarre things leftover in my pantry), lasagna noodles. Surely, this is bad on your teeth. But whenever I cook pasta, I usually chew on a noodle until the pot of 'em is done. Kinda gross -- but I like it, have since I was a kid.

Less bizarre or, at least, more socially acceptable is my fondness for raw cookie dough. I had a girlfriend once (literally) who was fabulous for myriad reasons, one of which was the big purse she'd take to the movies and fill with snacks. One time, she brought cookie dough. I wanted to ask her to marry me right then and there. But now she's married with kids, packing cookie dough for some other guy in a theater far, far away. Sigh ...

Anyhoo, I tried flour once but was, thankfully, turned off by it. Needed some melted butter or something.

Lord, maybe I have a form of pica -- you know, that disorder where people eat odd things, like detergent or cotton balls? I'm not that far gone, I pray; but I'm not above going home this evening and feasting on potato tartare.

So what's your deep-dark eating secret?

Peace, love and 10 pounds of potatoes ... XOXO
