I'm a pack rat of the worst kind, minus being a carrier for plague (fingers crossed).

Mental case in point: I've been stockpiling things that I thought, "Hmm, I've got to put this in a blog." But the opportunity never came up.

So here's some random stuff -- quotes, mostly -- I need to purge from my mind and desktop and make way for ... Well, more random stuff. Like this bumper sticker that says "Warhol 4 president." Why is this here? I need an assistant. Or someone to just set fire to my desk, that'd probably be much easier.

Anyway, back to my scattered brain and random item No. 1: A great quote about writing, or at least having the ability to do so, from Nobel literature prize winner Doris Lessing (according to the BBC by way of CNN). "This is why I keep telling anyone younger than me, don't imagine you'll have it forever. Use it while you've got it because it'll go. It's sliding away like water down a plughole." That's awesome AND scary, what with my inability to get my novel written. It's all in my head, but that's a dangerous place.

Random item No. 2: My favorite quote from Jack Kerouac (and the only one I know, to be honest). ""The only people for me are the mad ones, the ones who are mad to live, mad to talk, mad to be saved, desirous of everything at the same time, the ones who never yawn or say a commonplace thing, but burn, burn, burn, like fabulous yellow Roman candles exploding like spiders across the stars." Love that. Besides, I'm all about "the mad ones," too, Jack. Unless it involves rush-hour traffic.

Next, my most random thing to share: A conversation overheard this summer at a restaurant while my high school best friend, Cory, was in town. It was between two guys, chatting over breakfast. What they said was so intriguing (or maybe I hadn't been distracted by my omelette yet) that I had to text myself parts of it. Is that a crime? Whatever, here goes ... "They cut off his happy place." I swear that's what he said. Followed a few minutes later by, "Think of all the trouble they could've saved if they cut it off when he was 16." Oh. My. Goodness. Mary. What the freak?

Finally, a quote from "Sin City," which I saw for the umpteenth time recently: "You can't kill a man without knowing whether or not you ought to." So very true.
