"Downton Abbey" has the world searching online for vintage clothing.
The hit British drama, which focuses on an aristocratic British family and its staff, has sparked a huge increase in global searches for vintage clothing, according to Alibaba.com.
The website, a China-based e-commerce marketplace for businesses, has attributed the increase in searches to the TV show and royal events, reported hollywoodreporter.com Monday.
"Period drama clothing and accessories are in fashion, and it is apparently due to a combination of the Royal Wedding, the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and the very popular 'Downton Abbey' series," said Molly Morgan, senior manager of international corporate affairs for Alibaba.com EMEA, in the report. "We’re even seeing trends of 'Downton Abbey' parties popping up around the world, creating consumer interest and extra sales for small businesses in the vintage clothing industry."
By the numbers, searches for vintage women's clothing was up 273 percent, elbow-length gloves 136 percent and up 190 percent for sequined headbands, according to the report.
The increases also extended to searches for men’s clothing – morning suits up 67 percent, top hats 617 percent plus cigarette holders 538 percent, feather hats 133 percent and fascinators 97 percent.
