World correspondent Dylan Clem filed this report on East Central's victory in a Grady Skillern All-City Preview consolation game at East Central on Friday night:
Running back Warren Walker rushed for two touchdowns, including the winner from the 2 with 41 seconds left, as the East Central Cardinals beat the Central Braves 14-13.
The Cardinals scored the game's first touchdown on a 9-yard run by Walker.
Their defense had a lot to prove coming off a disappointing loss to Edison on Thursday night and came out with intensity but were constantly on their heels as Central QB and TU commit D’Angelo Brewer continued to make plays with his feet and extend drives.
“The defense wasn’t very good tonight, with a young team we're going to have some growing pains,” said EC head coach Bobby Klinck. “We have to do a couple things, we're not as big as we would like to be but we’ll get better. This is a junior heavy class and all these kids need is game experience.”
Brewer hit wide receiver D. J. Daniels for a 5-yard touchdown pass with 2:22 to go in the first half of the half-game.
“We rose to the occasion tonight, it was a good win for us, we played a very good Central Braves team," Klinck said. "D’Angelo Brewer is one of the best players were going to see this season.”
The Cardinals rushed for 51 yards on 13 carries and quarterback Tre'von Cherry completed 9-of-11 passes for 69 yards.
“I think we played really good” said Cherry, “Coming from last night and how bad we played, we turned it around and just played our game. When we play our game we play really good and at the end of the game when we were down, we didn’t get rattled and we came back and scored.”
Brewer had an impressive night for the Braves completing five passes for 51 yards while scoring two touchdowns.
