Chris Hall will not return as Edison’s head football coach for the 2013 season.
“We’re going in a different direction with the football program,” Tulsa Public Schools athletic director Gil Cloud said on Thursday.
The Eagles finished 1-9 under Hall in their first season in Class 6A. Hall also was Edison’s interim head coach in the final seven games of 2011.
Edison, the smallest school in 6A, is 8-62 since consecutive 5A playoff appearances in 2004 and ‘05. Edison and Booker T. Washington are the only TPS high schools in 6A football.
“Tulsa Public and I have decided to part ways,” Hall said. “For me, trying to play 6A football with just two full-time assistants is unacceptable.”
Cloud responded that head coaches are expected to recruit volunteer assistants to fortify their staffs.
“All of our coaching staffs have lay coaches,” Cloud said. “Bobby Klinck at (5A No. 1) East Central only has two full-time, teacher-assistants and he recruited five others.”
Although each TPS high school’s football program is budgeted for a head coach plus four full-time assistants, sometimes personnel issues prevent four full-time assistants from being hired.
Hall said he has received some offers from Texas high schools, but would like to return to coaching at the collegiate level, where he coached at Hutchinson (Kan.) in 2004. He also has been an assistant at Cascia Hall, Central, Lawton, Lawton Eisenhower and Geronimo.
Edison finished its 2012 season with a 31-24 loss to 6A playoff qualifier Sapulpa last Friday.
“We have good kids and they deserve better,” Hall said.
Cloud said he would like to have a new head coach hired in time for the second semester that starts Jan. 7. Candidates can apply to Edison athletic director Raymond Shipps by e-mail at ShippRa@tulsaschools.org or by calling 918-808-3247.
