On the second Saturday of every month, hikers can enjoy a free hike through the Keystone Ancient Forest. The forest will be open to the public from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. The forest is filled with 300-year-old cedars and 500-year-old post-oak trees.
According to the city of Sand Springs’ website, two trails are available — one is about 1.5 miles long, and one is 0.6 miles long. Deer, mountain lions, bobcats, eagles, migratory birds and more than 80 species of butterflies inhabit the forest, the website says.
Hikers may hike alone or request a trail guide, if enough are available. No reservations are necessary, and no pets are allowed on the hike.
Also this weekend, the Tulsa Audubon Society and Jenks High School will host Bald Eagle Days. Thew will offer an “eagle watch” from 8:30 to 10 a.m. Saturday and Sunday in Helmerich Park, 7301 S. Riverside Drive. Then, seminars and demonstrations will be held at Jenks High School Freshman Academy, 205 E. B St. in Jenks, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. both days.
