After hosting the 20-38 New Orleans Hornets tonight in Oklahoma City, the Thunder drives into a difficult stretch.
Trailing San Antonio by three games in the NBA’s Western Conference, the slightly retooled Thunder – having acquired defensive specialist Ronnie Brewer and, for a second tour of stretch-run duty, veteran point guard Derek Fisher – visits Denver on Friday (9:30 p.m., ESPN), visits the Los Angeles Clippers on Sunday (2:30 p.m., KTUL-8), hosts the L.A. Lakers on Tuesday (8:30 p.m., TNT) and visits the New York Knicks on March 7 (7 p.m., TNT).
After playing at Charlotte on March 8, OKC hosts Boston for a noon game on Sunday, March 10, then travels to San Antonio on March 11 (7:30 p.m., Fox Sports Oklahoma).
Having prevailed seven times during nine consecutive road dates, the Spurs now are at home for five in a row. If the Thunder falters significantly during the next couple of weeks, San Antonio would seem destined to repeat as the No. 1 seed in the Western Conference playoffs.
Oklahoma City needs to get hot, stay hot and stop losing close games. In its first seven games decided by six or fewer points this season, the Thunder won six times. In its last 10 decided by no more than six points, OKC is 3-7.
