After nearly 8 months of waiting, Facebook is finally rolling out their Graph Search to everyone, so long as you're an english-speaking person living in the U.S.
When we first saw it,
even I thought it was pretty cool, and would allow that it's going to bring big changes.
Facebook certainly made a big deal about it, and we all waited with baited breath to try to get an early invite, hoping they'd roll it out soon.
As the weeks turned into months, a lot of us wondered if this was really going to happen. Facebook admitted that they needed the time to work on "indexing content", but by the time it finally rolls out, it seems to have lost quite a bit of it's luster. I've had it for a good while, and it's a neat feature to have, but not the game-changing feature I thought it might be earlier. Maybe it will be after it's fully released?
Check your privacy settingsKeep in mind that anyone can see what you've posted publicly, or they've been given explicit permission to see it by you. If you want to make changes to what photos and details are searchable, click the lock icon at the top right of your Facebook page.
Updates coming to a newsfeed near you.One of the other big updates coming today is the way that Facebook shows you the content from the Pages you like, the people you follow and the ads they sell.
In Facebook's own words:"The goal of News Feed is to deliver the right content to the right people at the right time so they don’t miss the stories that are important to them. Ideally, we want News Feed to show all the posts people want to see in the order they want to read them."
It's a goal that's easier said than done, and many businesses are worried that their marketing strategies for Facebook will have to change. In reality, it might just make things easier. Facebook says that the average user scrolls down to see only 57% of their newsfeed, completely missing out on the other 43%. The changes to the algorithm say that older posts that are still getting a lot of traffic and comments elsewhere will be repositioned up top again, just in case you missed it the first time around. While the newsfeed will constantly change it's behavior based on how you interact with the posts, it will increase the chance that folks see what you've posted, even if it's a few hours old.
