In "The Hobbit," our heroes come across Beorn the shapeshifting bear-man. He recieved the dwarves, Bilbo and Gandalf when they were on their way to the Lonely Mountain to battle Smaug. Later in "The Fellowship of the Ring," the company were given the "honey cakes of the Beornings" as part of the parting gifts of the elves.

Well, if you ever wondered what this delightful food could taste like, we've found a recipe for you!

Beorn's Honey Cake

If you're a fan of "The Hobbit," you'll recognize this delightful dish from the book. Now, instead of wondering what the savory food tastes like, you can try it for yourself!

Ingredients:

For the cake:

2 eggs
2/3 cup clover honey
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1½ cup all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
A small pinch of baking soda (to counter the honey's acidity)
1 teaspoon salt
1 cup heavy whipping cream

For the frosting:

¾ cup powdered sugar
½ stick unsalted butter
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 tablespoon honey
1 tablespoon heavy whipping cream
¼ cup chopped toasted walnuts

Directions:
1. Preheat oven to 325 degrees. Grease a 8- or 9-inch cake pan.
2. Beat eggs in a mixing bowl until thick. Add the honey and vanilla, mix well.
3. Combine the flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt in another bowl. In three parts, add the dry mixture alternately with the cream to the egg mixture, beginning and ending with the dry mixture.
4. Mix each addition well. Pour batter into pan.
5. Bake for 30-40 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in center comes out clean. Let cool.
6. To make the frosting, mix butter and sugar until creamed. Add vanilla, honey and whipping cream and mix. Lastly, stir in walnuts.
7. Spread the finished frosting on top of the cake once it is cooled.

Warning: Make sure that you don't, in fact, become a bear once the cake is consumed.
