A reader recently asked this question: "Why can't Tulsa get a good fish franchise. Red Lobster, Long John Silver and Captain D's, please. Bring back Arthur Treacher's."

Arthur Treacher's Fish and Chips stores have been gone from Tulsa for many years, and according to an Internet search, fewer than 50 remain, scattered over eight northern states. Many have been co-branded with Nathan's Famous Frankfurters.

The chain was named after Arthur Treacher (1894–1975), an English character actor who was known as "the perfect butler" for his performances as Jeeves, as a butler in several Shirley Temple films and the role of Constable Jones in "Mary Poppins."

Treacher served as a spokesman for the restaurant chain, which began in Columbus, Ohio, in 1969, in its early years.

Early principals in the business included S. Robert Davis, a real estate developer who built and leased several Colonel Sanders Kentucky Fried Chicken stores; Dave Thomas, who sold his Colonel Sanders franchises back to that company for $3 million and went on to found Wendy's, and L. S. Hartzog, who had a chain of bakeries that sold biscuits to Colonel Sanders franchisees nationally.

I'm typically not a big fan of national chains, as most of them aim for the lowest common culinary denominator, but are there any good ones you would like to see come to Tulsa?
