OKLAHOMA CITY – At 37, guard Derek Fisher is the newest and oldest member of the Oklahoma City Thunder roster.

The former Los Angeles Laker guard signed with OKC on March 21. Within a few days, he visited the Oklahoma City National Memorial and Museum, dedicated to the victims of the 1995 bombing of the Murrah Federal Building.

“The experience of going by the memorial was appropriate,” Fisher said on Monday. “When you come to this community and you join the team, you become an instant member of the community. Without having an understanding of (Oklahoma City’s) history, and where the community was before the bombing and where it is now, I think it makes it tough for you to feel at home. So, the time spent there was well worth it.

“It was obviously emotional, but it gave me a great sense of who the people are in this community and what they’re made of.”

In 20 regular-season games with the Thunder, Fisher averaged 4.9 points while connecting on only 34 percent of his shots from the field (31 percent from 3-point range). During the playoffs, he has been more productive: a 6.5 scoring average, 41 percent from the field, 38 percent on 3-pointers.

With the Lakers, Fisher was a member of five championship teams. If the Thunder can defeat the Miami Heat in the best-of-seven NBA Finals, Fisher would become only the 14th player in league history – and the only current player – to win as many as six championship rings.
