“Yoshimi” is headed to the stage.

Multiple sources say the musical, based on Oklahoma City rock act The Flaming Lips' 2002 studio album, “
Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots,” will debut this winter at the
La Jolla Playhouse in
San Diego, Calif.
The playhouse officially announced the production last week.
Last year, Lips frontman
Wayne Coyne told Billboard music magazine that the musical will include some 30 songs from the band’s career. The theater company confirmed that tunes from Lips albums “
The Soft Bulletin” and “
At War with the Mystics” will be featured in the show.
The venue’s official website says the director is multiple Tony Award-winning
Des McAnuff (“Big River,” “The Who’s ‘Tommy’,” “Jersey Boys” and the current revival of “Jesus Christ Superstar”).
The musicial has been in the works since 2007, and tells the tale of young artist Yoshimi, and the triumph of love and optimism over the mystery of mortality.
