Here is a video of Leon Russell's "A Song for You," in 1971. It's from the eponymous "Leon Russell" album, a solo studio effort released after his famous "Mad Dogs and Englishmen" tour.

It's often credited as one of the most covered songs of modern music history. The most recent version may be one by pop songbird Christina Aguilera.

"I love you in a place where there's no space or time /
I love you for in my life you are a friend of mine /
And when my life is over /
Remember when we were together /
We were alone and I was singing this song for you."

Here is another Leon Russell tune, "Superstar," actually co-written by Russell and Bonnie Bramlett. The Carpenters, Rita Coolidge, Bette Midler and Luther Vandross all helped make the song famous. Sonic Youth re-introduced it to my generation in 1994.
