Florida State to the Big 12? This War Chant sounds a lot like a War Hymn

Florida State to the Big 12? I don’t know. Just doesn’t sound right.

Of course, that’s exactly what I said about Texas A&M to the Southeastern Conference.

Texas A&M followers will disagree here, but this whole scenario sounds familiar.

The Aggies, tired of the Big 12’s favoritism toward the University of Texas, got out from under Bevo’s shadow and left in pursuit of the wealth and prestige of the SEC.

Now we hear that Florida State has grown weary of the Atlantic Coast Conference’s favoritism toward “the four North Carolina schools” — Duke, North Carolina, North Carolina State and Wake Forest — and that FSU is perturbed by a supposedly paltry deal brokered with TV partner ESPN.

This War Chant sounds a lot like a War Hymn.

So far it seems more like posturing than due diligence. FSU’s chairman of the board of trustees says he wants the school to explore its membership with the ACC and whether or not a move to the Big 12 would be beneficial, then he says he was just keeping “an open mind.” The FSU president also apologized to the ACC and said the school wasn’t trying to leave the conference. Coach Jimbo Fisher says if leaving for the Big 12 is what’s in FSU’s best interests, “then that’s what we need to do.”

The ACC’s annual spring meetings began Monday in South Carolina. There’s a lot of BCS playoff ground for everyone to cover, so it’s unlikely ACC coaches and athletic directors will stand and debate FSU’s membership.

Any decisions to be made about Florida State’s future will be made in Tallahassee, not in a board room at the beachfront Ritz-Carlton in Amelia Island.

However, the Big 12’s spring meetings are May 30-June 1 in Phoenix. That’s still two weeks away, plenty of time for the Big 12 expansion committee to work up a handful of scenarios (Add FSU and stand at 11? Add Louisville or Clemson to get to 12?) that send the Seminoles to Oklahoma or Oklahoma State every year.

Don’t expect to learn anything from this week’s ACC meetings. If FSU is moving from the ACC to the Big 12, recent history tells us the ACC will be the last to know.
