Billie Joe Armstrong announced Sunday that the 40-year-old rocker is headed to rehab.
The news comes after the band’s performance at the iHeartRadio Music Festival Friday in which Armstrong had an onstage meltdown.
Complaining about the group’s time being cut short, Armstrong said:
“One minute left, one minute (expletive) left. You’re gonna give me (expletive) one minute? ... I’m not (expletive) Justin Bieber, you (expletives)!” he yelled. Justin Bieber was not an act during this two-day concert event that featured such performers as Taylor Swift, Aerosmith, Rihanna, Usher, Bon Jovi, and Lil Wayne.
The Associated Press reports Armstrong smashed his guitar before leaving the stage.
Following the tirade, the band said in a statement to the AP that it apologized to those it offended at the festival.
According to the AP, what Armstrong is being treated for is unknown.
Earlier this month, Armstrong was hospitalized in Italy for an undisclosed ailment, but went on to perform at the MTV VMAs Sept. 6, and has since appeared with the band for other performances.
This latest development arrived just days before tomorrow's release of “Uno,” the band’s ninth album and follow-up to the 2009 project “21st Century Breakdown.”
