J.C. Watts is one of the University of Oklahoma’s favorite sons. The former U.S. Congressman and Sooners quarterback was the MVP of both the 1980 and 1981 Orange Bowl wins over Florida State.
J.C. Watts pulls for Oklahoma each week. But he won’t when his son Trey Watts — this week’s Conference USA offensive player of the week — lines up for the Golden Hurricane in Saturday's 11 a.m. game. Trey Watts, a four-year starter at running back, had 247 all-purpose yards in Saturday’s 30-27 victory over Colorado State.
This isn’t the first time J.C. Watts has cheered for Tulsa over OU. The teams met in Norman in 2011, with OU capturing a 47-14 win.
“Two of Trey’s four years, they will have played each other. Two years ago, before the game, I did the chapel for OU. Coach (Bob) Stoops said to his coaches that this is the one game that I know J.C. won’t be rooting for Oklahoma,” J.C. Watts said.
“You follow your bloodlines. A couple of years ago, I was asked who I would be rooting for and my wife said ‘If our son is playing for Iraq, we’re rooting for Iraq.’”
Stoops said Watts has been a great ambassador for OU.
“We’re all very proud of J.C. Watts and his legacy here and his legacy with what he’s been doing in the past so many years for our country,” Stoops said. “He’s a great representative of OU and we always love seeing him here whenever he can come back and be around.
“His son Trey had a huge game last week. I think he had right around 250 all-purpose yards. He almost had 200 rushing the ball. He’s a big factor for them and a guy that we’re really going to concentrate and focus on this week.”
