On Saturday night, there will be an alumni basketball game between McLain and Booker T. Washington at 7:30 p.m. at BTW's Nathan E. Harris Field House. Some of the greatest players in the schools' history are scheduled to play including McLain's Shea Seals, Brian Debose and Carlos Norton; and BTW's Clinton McDaniel, Creason Hay, Richard Dumas and Antonio Reed.
Another one of McLain's all-time greats, Johnny Craven, e-mailed me Thursday after reading my column about the game at tulsaworld.com. The column included some memories of the rivalry from former BTW players William Tisdale, Hay and Fred Jones. Craven, a 1980 McLain graduate, was kind enough to answer my question on his most memorable moments from playing against BTW.
Craven wrote, "There were several great games against the Hornets. I would have to say my most memorable game was my senior year and it was the first game of the year and it was against Washington. I made my first 8 shots of the game and had a total of 24 points. It was the first time I faced Wayman Tisdale. There was much talk about Wayman and he had an awesome game two nights before we played them.
"Wayman had a pretty good game as well. I remember making those first 8 shots which got me into a rhythm and if I can remember, I think I finished 10-for-12 and a couple of free throws. My second favorite game was in my sophomore year. We were playing the Hornets for the All-City Championship at Jenks High School and in the 4th quarter, I made 13 of 14 free throws to keep McLain ahead during a tight game.
"It was the most memorable because when when we were on the court trying to keep the ball from Washington, Mike Mims was yelling to his players to foul each time we took the ball out after they scored on us. But when I got the ball in my hands, he would yell `not him, not him.' We were able to hold them off and win the game. Those were fun games."
Tickets for Saturday's game are $5 with proceeds going to the BTW Centennial Organization and McLain athletic program. Mims will coach BTW and Luther Pegues will coach McLain.
Craven, named as an honorary captain for Saturday's game, won't be able to attend, but said "I hope everyone enjoys themselves and has fun."
Craven, who helped Tulsa win the 1981 NIT, now lives in Vallejo, Calif. He has been in California for eight years. He is a manager for the Bishop Wisecarver Corporation in Pittsburg, Calif., specializing in linear and curvilinear guided motion technologies. He has been employed with the company for seven years. Before that he worked 14 years for the Boeing Co. in Wichita.
