Dance Magazine editor Wendy Perron, in her blog about the best moments in dance for 2012, singles out former Tulsa Ballet dancer Yoshihisa Arai for his performance in the company’s world premiere production of Edwaard Liang’s “Romeo and Juliet.”
Perron, who reviewed the February performance for the magazine, praised Arai for his “killer technique and mischief to match, as Mercutio.”
Arai was with Tulsa Ballet for the 2011-2012 season. Among the roles he danced with the company was the bravura male solo in “The Spectre of the Rose,” part of the company’s “Ballet Russe Evening.” As the physical embodiment of the titular flower, Arai “maintained a feeling of lightness and lyricism throughout, making that dramatic final leap of an exit into a real triumph,” as the Tulsa World’s review stated.
Arai is now a member of the Joffrey Ballet in Chicago.
