Rusty Seelye called the other day to reminisce about the heyday of the Green Onion restaurant. Seelye had worked with co-owner Dave Ingram previously at the Fountains and when the Green Onion opened Nov. 10, 1986.

Seelye said he became a co-owner in 1990 and was general manager and managing partner until he quit to go into another line of work in 1998. The Green Onion closed recently under its third ownership group.

"It was sad to see it close; it has such a tradition," Seelye said. "The early '90s were just unbelievable. Some Friday and Saturday nights we would have 300 to 400 customers, and that's a lot of people for that space.

"During that time we even had road construction on Yale that almost reached to our doorstep, and we still had great crowds.

"I think the main reasons for Green Onion's success were we had an experienced staff come over from the Fountains, we had Dave's reputation in fine dining, Ann Williams at KRMG did a great job on our commercials, and we had good food and service. It was the whole package."
